I heard that adult websites can expose computers to viruses, spyware, adware, and all sorts of other ills. They also cause PCs to crash for hours.

How is that possible? And I know adult sites refer to not just images, what should also be avoided?

Use good antimalware programs:
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - manual scan

Select Full Scan.
Remove all infections that it finds after scan.
