How many spam messages do you get in your webmail? Lots of people average about 100 pieces a day that try every kind of extreme measure to not get caught. They twist and bend the language, they promise to change your love life, they try to sell you Acai berries to help you lose weight, and they promise you that they are from corrupt politicians in dictatorships far away with millions in Swiss bank accounts who are willing to just give it all to you. At one point about four years ago when spam seemed to completely clog the Internet, courts in the US began to send spammers to jail years at a time and fine spammers hundreds of millions of dollars to keep the Internet from collapsing. All of those actions haven't dented the amount of spam being sent out in the least bit. Spam continues its march forward. But to many of us who use the best webmail services, spam has all but ceased to exist. How, you ask? The antispam software used by Webmail services like Gmail have become so good at detecting these time wasters and sending them straight to the spam folder, no one needs to think of them anymore.

The great thing about the antispam software used by these services is that not only do they succeed marvelously in spotting spam and banishing it away to the spam folder, they have got very good at never sending legitimate mail down those tubes too. Bill Gates once proposed that spammers should be charged a penny for each piece of spam they sent out that receivers returned. EarthLink tried to banish spam by allowing e-mail only from preapproved people. Companies that design antispam software, ones like 86 security these days, claim near 100% success.  An antispam software company called Abaca tries to judge each e-mail recipient for his attractiveness to spammers. Anything that is sent to an e-mail address that actually attracts lots of spam is what they choose to really check out with all their might. They make sure that spam doesn't even arrive in a person's e-mail inbox, let alone need routing to the spam folder.

Antispam software these days doesn't use blacklists; they just look for the kind of behavior that spammers must indulge in. However, among webmail services, Gmail appears to be singularly successful. Users of Yahoo Mail and Microsoft's Live Mail still complain of those services' hopeless record with spam. If it takes everyone else some time to catch up with Google, spammers have a window that large to continue in their business. Now, Gmail is going even further in its mission to help you sort your important mail from the merely useful, and the absolutely useless. Enter the new priority mail inbox.

The priority mail inbox is a new algorithm Gmail uses to not just send useless stuff to the spam folder, but also to sort your mail into two categories - for a very important folder and a merely relevant folder. As anyone who's tried this new service has undoubtedly found out, Gmail is getting very good at telling one from the other. It could be the direction that a new generation of antispam software takes in the future.
